Noel Whelan backed Leeds United to sign Said Benrahma this summer after the club cooled their interest in Liverpool’s Harry Wilson.

The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that Benrahma would be a “vitally important” for Marcelo Bielsa next season if they can land the 25-year-old this summer.

The Athletic‘s Phil Hay revealed that the the newly-promoted side are “very much in the fight” for the Brentford star but admitted they face stiff competition for his signature.

Football Insider understands that Leeds, who have pursued Wilson for some time, have cooled their interest in the winger who spent last season on loan at Bournemouth.

Whelan suggested that Benrahma, who scored 17 goals in the Championship last season, is the man to eventually succeed Pablo Hernandez at Elland Road.

“If you are talking about number tens I would much rather see a Benrahma,” he told Football Insider.

“You have got to put your eggs in one basket and if Benrahma is the main target they have got to go all out to make that one happen.

“I would pick Benrahma over Wilson, absolutely. He is a better fit for Leeds United. We need to make sure that we get the right quality of players to make a difference in the Premier League.

“Benrahma does not have the experience but he is like Pablo Hernandez. If he is ticking, the whole team is ticking. He fits the mould perfectly for what Leeds are looking for – the style of play, the eye for a pass.

“He could be vitally important for us next season if we can get a deal over the line.”
