It was a disappointing 2020-21 season for Fulham as they were relegated from the Premier League at the first time of asking, and on a personal level it was also one to forger for Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The 26-year-old scored just three top flight goals for the Cottagers last season in 27 appearances, and it was a campaign that was interrupted by injuries, illness and a lack of faith from head coach Scott Parker.

At times Parker preferred winger Ivan Cavaleiro up-front to Mitrovic, even though Mitrovic netted 11 times in 37 outings the last time Fulham were in the Premier League.

That is proof that Mitrovic belongs at the highest level but several people have their doubts, including a former Fulham manager.

Lawrie Sanchez spoke exclusively to Football League World about Mitrovic and believes Mitrovic is in the same mould as another striker who has found himself to be prolific in the second tier.

“In the Championship he’s a proven goalscorer – it’s a bit like (Teemu) Pukki at Norwich,” Sanchez said.

“I know he scored a few goals early on in the Premier League but he dried up – put him back down in the Championship and he found the floodgates open again.

“I see him very much like Mitrovic but for whatever reason they (Scott Parker) stopped give him a chance in the Premier League when they were fighting relegation whereas they (Norwich) kept Pukki playing.”

Pukki has scored 55 goals in 84 Championship matches for the Canaries and whilst he did score 11 times in his one and only Premier League campaign, he did go through barren spells.

Mitrovic will not want to be known as a Championship specialist though and he may be eager to prove he can still do it at the highest level – but he may need to secure a move away to do that.
