Ipswich Town are hoping to sign Jordan Jones from Rangers this summer after Steven Gerrard gave the winger’s exit the green-light, Football League World understands.

Jones has been on the books at Ibrox since the summer of 2019 after spells with Middlesbrough and Kilmarnock, but has struggled for opportunities in a Rangers shirt.

The 26-year-old has managed only 19 appearances for Gers, with Football League World told that Gerrard has given his exit his seal of approval already this summer.

Football League World understand that it is Ipswich hoping to land a deal for the winger at this stage, although they do face competition from Sunderland, who had Jones on loan last season.

Jones made 21 appearances for the Black Cats in League One last season, scoring three goals as Sunderland’s season ended in play-off heartache against Lincoln City.

Ipswich and Sunderland are joined by League One rivals, Wigan Athletic, in showing an interest in Jones, who also has a Championship admirer in the form of Blackpool.

It’s been indicated to Football League World that any move to bring Jones back to the EFL will be on loan.

Rangers are looking to defend their 55th Scottish Premiership title. However, Jones is not part of Gerrard’s plans moving into the 2021/22 campaign, which starts this weekend as Gers face Livingston.

Should Ipswich land his signature, it will be Paul Cook’s 11th arrival at Portman Road this summer.
