Discovery+ and Quest pundit Ian Holloway says that keeping Aleksandar Mitrovic could be vital for Fulham this season.

Following the Cottagers’ relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, Mitrovic was linked with a move away from Craven Cottage during the summer transfer window.

Italian giants Roma and Russian side Dynamo Moscow were both linked with the Serbian international during the course of the market.

In the end though, Mitrovic would remain with Fulham, and subsequently put pen to paper on a new deal with the London club.

That new contract has now secured Mitrovic’s future with the Cottagers until the end of the  2025/26 season.

On the pitch meanwhile, Mitrovic has once again enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign in the Championship.

The 26-year-old has already scored ten goals in 11 league games for Marco Silva’s this season, with a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Swansea shortly before the October international break taking him past the career milestone of 50 goals in his Championship career.

Now it seems as though Holloway believes that retaining Mitrovic could be key for the Cottagers this season, even if he admits other sides in the division may not have been able to do so without the parachute payments Fulham received after relegation in the summer.

Asked how important it was for Fulham to keep Mitrovic this season despite that summer interest, Holloway exclusively told Football League World: “I think it was vital. They’re playing their own style, they’ve got an ex-Premier League manager in Marco Silva, and Mitrovic has been an absolute sensation for Fulham ever since he’s been there, from the moment he came to be honest with you.

“Obviously it was Jokanovic who took him there when he was the Fulham manager, and they just got on like a house on fire.

So Fulham have very wisely kept him, and with a return of ten goals already, they’re not going to be goal shy are they this season?

“So that give them every chance of doing well, and that’s the good thing, that the Premier League has dished out some money for them so they can afford to keep him. Some other clubs that we’re talking about, they haven’t had that windfall, so it is a little bit unfair.

“But that’s the little bit of luck that Fulham have had and I can’t see how any other striker can out-score Mitrovic this season. They’re more or less guaranteed goals.”
