Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on Wrexham's reported interest in signing Tommy Doyle this summer
Don Goodman believes Tommy Doyle is the exact kind of player Wrexham should be targeting this summer.
According to Teamtalk, the Red Dragons are one of the sides interested in signing the midfielder in the transfer window.
It’s believed that the 23-year-old is available from Wolves after falling out of favour under Vitor Pereira, and could cost £3 million.
However, the Welsh outfit face competition from the likes of Sunderland Sheffield United in the race for his signature.
Goodman has claimed that Doyle would be a good addition to Phil Parkinson’s side, as they prepare for life in the Championship next season.
He is pleased to see the club linked with younger players that still have a lot of their career left, warning they were previously interested in too many who were coming to the end of their playing days.
“This is a pleasing connection, really, Tommy Doyle and Wrexham, from a Wrexham perspective,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
“Because all I’ve seen most of the time is Wrexham linked with players, with the greatest of respects, that are towards the very, very back end of their careers.
“Whereas this lad, Tommy Doyle, has got a lot of top football ahead of him.
“I think he’s an excellent player, ball-playing midfielder who works very, very hard, a team player and an ideal type of player for Wrexham to be recruiting.”
Doyle had cemented himself as a regular part of the Wolves side under Gary O’Neil, prior to his departure from the club.
However, the midfielder’s game time significantly reduced with the arrival of Pereira, starting just one Premier League fixture since he joined last December.
The 23-year-old has featured 51 times in the Premier League throughout his career, including 14 starts, so would bring plenty of top level experience to Wrexham.
However, it remains to be seen if the Red Dragons can convince him to make the switch from Wolves.
Wrexham have a lot of older players in their squad, so targeting someone of Doyle’s profile is what they need to do.
The midfielder has Premier League experience and is potentially available for a very affordable fee, so this could be great business if they can do it.
Competition from Sunderland and Sheffield United will be hard to fend off, but we’ve seen Wrexham attract other big names in the past.
This is the kind of signing the club needs to make if they’re to survive in the Championship next year.
