It was reported by Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph last weekend that the Blues were in talks with Dutch side NEC Nijmegen over a move for the 23-year-old.

However, it’s understood that they face competition from a number of clubs this summer after a strong campaign in the Eredivisie.

The winger contributed six goals and four assists as his side finished eighth in the Dutch top flight table.

Goodman believes that Hansen could be a very exciting addition to Chris Davies’ side, if they can get a deal over the line.

He has highlighted some of the key qualities that could make him a strong signing for the Blues, as they look to immediately compete at the top end of the Championship table next year.

“Yes, Sontje Hansen looks like, if Birmingham City can get that over the line, that would be a very exciting signing,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“Young, pretty direct, ball-carrier, six goals and four assists in a team that’s sort of mid-pack in the Dutch Eredivisie.

“It’s a strong season, and when you consider he only started 23 games as well, so yes he could be a very exciting addition.

“And an unknown quantity that Championship defenders might be a bit wary of.”

Birmingham’s League One success

Davies oversaw Birmingham’s record-breaking League One campaign, with the team earning 111 points on their way to the title.

Owner Tom Wagner will be keen to see the club continue their impressive competitive streak, with their long-term target set on a return to the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether Hansen can be convinced to make the switch to St. Andrew’s, however, with multiple teams in the race for his signature.

The 23-year-old also has two years remaining on his current contract.

Hansen signing could be a smart move by Birmingham

Hansen looks to have the potential to be a strong Championship level player.

He performed well for a mid-table Dutch side last year, and stood out as someone with a lot of attacking threat.

Given the competition around his signature, there are no guarantees that Birmingham will be able to convince him to join.

However, the project being built at the Midlands outfit could be attractive, and being able to bring him in would be a great show of confidence in what Davies is doing.
