Manchester United academy graduate James Weir has signed a one-year extension with Slovakia Super Liga side FK Pohronie.
After entering the restart bottom of the table, Pohronie avoided relegation thanks to victory over FK Senica in the final game of the season.
Weir signed with the club in March but didn't make his debut until June due to the coronavirus pandemic. The league also reduced the remaining matches from ten to five.
But this didn't stop Weir from impressing however as he played 90 minutes in four of five matches, registering a goal and an assist.
It has been a long road for the 24-year-old to find himself settled at a club, as he revealed earlier this month to Tribalfootball.
With his injury troubles behind him and Pohronie playing top-flight football next season, Weir has decided to stay another year to continue his positive progress.
"I think things have gone all for both me and the club," Weir told Tribalfootball.com after signing his new contract.
"I've got some minutes and played well and the club survived. So I think if I can get another 20-25 games I'll keep improving and help the club, also getting more exposure across Europe."
Pohronie jumped off bottom of the table in the penultimate round with a win over Nitra, but their survival still came down to the final round of games on July 11.
With Nitra beating Trencin, Weir's side needed a result over FK Senica to keep themselves out of the relegation play-off, which they secured with a nail-biting 1-0 victory.
And Weir revealed the celebrations were short-lived with Pohronie already back training ahead of the season commencing on August 8.
"Obviously we were all delighted. I don't many expected it either after the restart with just 5 games to play. We all ended up in a typical Slovakian bar with beer and bodovicha (slovak liqueur) and it was a quality night.
"I returned home only for a week. Due to COVID we have no break the season restarts on August 8th. So we were back training last Monday. I arrived on Wednesday and went straight into a game only playing one half."
