Former Chiefs midfielder headlines mass exodus at Polokwane City

Foot Africa has established that former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Cole Alexander has left Polokwane City along with four other players ahead of the start of the new Betway Premiership campaign set to commence on the weekend.

The 36-year-old ace signed for Rise and Shine in the January transfer window in 2024, on the back of a spell with Swedish second tier outfit Helsingborgs IF, whom he joined from Chiefs in August a year before.

While he was an important cog in the heart of City’s midfield, Cole only made 16 appearances across all competitions last season, registering two assists as he failed to find the back of the net, with the club finishing in seventh-place.

Overall, the veteran featured in 253 games in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), scoring a total of 12 goals and chipping in with nine assists. This includes spells at the now-defunct SuperSport United, Chippa United and Bidvest Wits among others.

Now, information reaching this publication indicates that Alexander is set for a new chapter as he is part of a mass exodus at Rise and Shine, with Simphiwe Maswansanyi, Langelihle Ndlovu, Bafana Nana, and Zimbabwean striker Douglas Mapfumo also heading through the exit door.

Furthermore, the Limpopo club lost key figures in Oswin Appollis and Manuel Sapunga, who have joined Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United, respectively, with the former netting on his debut against City in the MTN8 quarterfinal clash on Saturday.

On the other hand, the Johnny Mogaladi-owned side raided Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit Pretoria Callies, acquiring the services of Keorapetse Sebone, Moremi Seketso, Keagile Malepe and Mpho Mvundlela.

Having registered another respectable finish in the Betway Premiership last season, Phuthi Mohafe’s men will get their league campaign underway with a Limpopo derby clash against Magesi FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, 09 August.
