Sheffield Wednesday will have to cut their cloth accordingly this summer in the eyes of Jon Newsome when it comes to transfers, although he isn’t convinced that Fulham or West Brom will prise Josh Windass out of Hillsborough.

Windass has been one of Wednesday’s shining lights this season in a tough Championship campaign, with the forward leading the club’s fight for survival in recent weeks.

Over the season, the 27-year-old has nine goals and five assists to his name, which is a fine return given the Owls’ struggles on the whole.

Heading into the summer, then, it is little surprise to see that clubs like Fulham and West Brom have been linked with a move to sign the Wednesday forward, with their own relegation back into the Championship on the horizon.

Newsome does believe there’s no smoke without fire, but cast doubt over the current Premier League duo moving for Windass.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, he said: “In terms of clubs interested in Windass, you mention Fulham and West Brom, I’d be surprised if one of those clubs were coming in for him. But, you know, there’s no smoke without fire.”

Given Windass’ form this season in the Championship, Wednesday will want to retain him, even if they are relegated into League One.

However, the threat of relegation is looming large heading into this weekend and it will be vitally important that if the Owls are relegated, they balance the books in League One.

For Newsome, the club are going to have to cut their cloth accordingly if they slip out of the Championship.

He expressed: “The turnover of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, if they drop into League One, will reduce significantly. It’ll be a massive amount of money in terms of the percentage. You’ve got to cut your cloth accordingly.”

Wednesday have one game to save their skin in the Championship, but things are out of Darren Moore’s hands.

The Owls must beat Derby County to stand a chance of surviving, whilst also hoping that Rotherham United slip up elsewhere in the Championship when they take on Cardiff City.
