It was exclusively revealed by FLW that the full-back is attracting the attention of several teams from overseas following the Hatters’ relegation to League One.

The 25-year-old has been a key figure for the club since joining in 2022, including playing a crucial role in their rise to the Premier League in his first year in the side.

He featured 26 times for Luton last season, with Matt Bloomfield’s team finishing 22nd in the table.

Goodman expressed his surprise at the fact Doughty didn’t receive transfer interest from Premier League clubs following Luton’s relegation last year.

He believes that the Hatters have some leverage in negotiations despite their relegation due to the player signing a new deal 12 months ago, but that they could probably be tempted into a sale.

“I think when you get relegated from any division, in a perfect world you’d like to keep your best players, and there’s no doubt Alfie Doughty falls into that category,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“But I’ll be honest with you, I was really surprised a Premier League club didn’t take a punt on him last summer after Luton got relegated from the Premier League.

“I rate him that highly.

“Clearly, way too good for League One.

“And I guess, really, he would want to test himself at the best level possible, so obviously it will take a good bid to prise him away because I think he only signed a new contract at the start of last season.

“So, Luton are in a slight position of strength, but you would imagine a really good bid for Alfie Doughty would be enough to tempt him and Luton to cash in.”

Luton suffered relegation due to an inferior goal difference to Hull City after the two sides ended the season on the same amount of points.

Doughty is too good to be playing in League One

Doughty proved himself as one of Luton’s standout performers when they were in the Premier League, let alone during their time in the Championship.

It would be a surprise if he didn’t receive offers this summer after the Hatters were relegated for a second year in a row.

It remains to be seen what kind of fee Luton will be holding out for, but the 25-year-old is too good to be playing in League One and will surely push to make a move.

It would be a blow for the club to lose someone of Doughty’s quality, but that’s the consequence of suffering relegation.
