Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on the potential appointment of Rasmus Bertelsen at QPR

Don Goodman believes QPR might just have to take the gamble on Randers FC manager Rasmus Bertelsen in order to find out if he’s really good enough to manage at a Championship level.

It was reported earlier this week by Bold that the Hoops are interested in the appointment of the Danish coach.

The departure of Martí Cifuentes at the end of the campaign has left the London outfit without a manager.

QPR will be hoping to appoint someone that can improve on their 15th place position in the table under the Spaniard.

Goodman has looked at the history of Danish coaches in English football and found a mixed record.

He believes there’s an inherent risk in a move like this, but that the only way to know for sure whether it could work out is by actually following through on it and making the appointment.

“I don’t really know too much about Rasmus Bertelsen,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“I know Randers FC finished fourth in the Danish Superliga and I’m looking at the history of Danish head coaches in English football and of course you’re looking at Thomas Frank is the obvious one that’s doing well.

“Michael Laudrup had a good stint at Swansea, but then you’ve got the other ones like [Ståle] Solbakken who came over at Wolves and struggled a little bit.

“Yes, of course it would be a gamble, but the only way you’re going to know, as with all appointments, whether they’re going to work or not is cold, hard facts.

“If they actually get the job, do the job, then they’ll be judged.

“Not an easy question to answer.”

Cifuentes similarly made the move from Scandinavian football to QPR, arriving from Swedish side Hammarby in October 2023.

Bertelsen appointment would be a big risk

QPR are in a tricky position with the departure of Cifuentes and need stability going into next season.

Taking a risk on someone like Bertelsen could pay off really well if he hits the ground running, much like Cifuentes did.

However, the potential downside could drag the club into a relegation battle, which would be a disaster.

It’s hard to know for sure how he will do, although his track record in Denmark suggests he could turn out to be a shrewd appointment, but nobody will know until QPR make that decision to bring him in or not.
