The 31-year-old was linked with a move to Brazil in January, but a move never materialised
Former West Brom striker and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that Sheffield Wednesday will remain the "best place" for Josh Windass to be next season, but only if the owner, Dejphon Chansiri backs the club and manager Danny Rohl remains at the helm.
Those were his views in an exclusive interview with Football League World, as Windass could be subject to more transfer speculation in the summer after the 31-year-old was surprisingly linked with a move to Brazilian club Santos in January.
Windass is currently enjoying his best second-tier scoring season and has been a mainstay in Danny Rohl's side throughout 2024/25, but with the extension option at the end of the season meaning "it's up to [him] whether he stays or not," Sheffield Wednesday's play-off hero may look to end his five-year stay in South Yorkshire this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former striker Don Goodman criticized current Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri for making it difficult for the Owls to be a club which players want to come to.
"As ever with Sheffield Wednesday, there are all kinds of turmoil because of the owner they've got," he said.
"As well-intentioned as he may have been when he came through the door, he doesn't half make it difficult for people to find the club a very attractive option."
Despite this, Goodman feels that if current boss Danny Rohl remains at the club, and if Dejphon Chansiri supports the club, then there shouldn't be much movement for Josh Windass in the summer.
"With regards to Windass, I remember that he was linked with Santos in January which was quite remarkable at the time, but I didn't see that he was linked with anyone else.
"For me, as long as Danny Rohl stays and Mr Chansiri supports the project then Sheffield Wednesday is probably the best place for Josh Windass to be."
In an interview with the Sheffield Star in February, it was revealed that Josh Windass' current contract runs out in the summer, but he holds an option to extend it. According to the 31-year-old, it is seemingly up to him whether he wants to remain at Hillsborough going into 2025/26.
If he were to depart Sheffield Wednesday, a move to formerly linked with Santos or a club outside of England may prove a step-down for a striker who clearly still has the ability to make an impact in the Championship.
The 31-year-old has been relied on a lot this season, starting 31 of Wednesday's 38 Championship games this campaign, and he's rewarded Danny Rohl with 11 goals - matching the league tally of the Owls' League One promotion campaign in 2022/23.
It may take Danny Rohl to remain as Sheffield Wednesday manager for Josh Windass to continue his time at Hillsborough, but if this season marks his last at the club, he should have plenty of suitors in the Championship waiting to offer him a contract.
