Danny Mills has tipped Serge Aurier to be the surprise Tottenham player to watch next year.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England full-back claims Jose Mourinho can turn the inconsistent Ivory Coast international into a consistently top-class defender.
Aurier is in his third season at Tottenham but struggled to be a regular starter over Mauricio Pochettino, even after Kieran Trippier joined Atletico Madrid in the summer.
But Aurier has started all five matches at right-back since Mourinho took over as manager.
Asked by Football Insider to name the surprise Tottenham player to watch next year, Mills plumped for a player who has been frequently derided by a significant section of the club’s supporters. “Maybe Serge Aurier,” he said. “I look at Tottenham’s side, it’s fairly obvious who you’d pick [to play].
“There’s a few issues in midfield, Ndombele and Winks or Sissoko and Dier has come in a couple of times.
“But right-back is a bit of an issue, but, again, if Mourinho can get hold of Aurier on that right- hand side, coach him defensively, give him some belief… he’s a good player.
“He could be the biggest improvement under Mourinho.”
Aurier has been renowned for his recklessness and propensity for giving away fouls in dangerous areas.
But he has immediately won the faith of Mourinho after Pochettino often preferred the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters, Juan Foyth and even Moussa Sissoko and Davinson Sanchez ahead of him at right-back in the early months of this season.
In other Tottenham news, Paul Robinson has told Football Insider how ‘Spurs scouts are looking at signing’ brilliant centre-back who’s price tag rocketing by the week.
