Danny Mills claims that Leeds United cannot be far off being a sustainable club after owner Andrea Radrizzani lifted the lid on their spending this season.

The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the amount of money being spent on wages is alarming considering it is comparable to Premier League sides but that it should be mostly covered by the matchday revenue at Elland Road.

Radrizzani revealed to The Times that the club were spending around £30million-a-year on their players wages, with Marcelo Bielsa and the coaching staff taking the club’s expenditure to around £40million.

Mills says that it is startling to hear that the Whites are spending a similar amount to those in England’s top flight but claims that a packed Elland Road should mean Radrizzani is not far off from breaking even.

He told Football Insider: “You’ve got to look at it and say why is it not sustainable? £30million, is that an exaggerated figure on wages for the Championship? Possibly, it does seem an awful lot.

“You think Brighton, Burnley, there are teams in the Premier League who will have average wage bills of £35,000-a-week and that’s spread across their 25 players. For Leeds to be just under that, it does seem rather a lot, you have to say, it is an awful lot of money.

“They’re getting nearly 40,000 people in every week. That’s what, £1.2million a game they’re bringing in? Let’s say it’s £1million a game they’re bringing through the gate. You’ve got 20-odd games, so that’s £20million, then you’ve got TV and the rest of it.

“Actually, Leeds can’t be that far off sustainability.”

Radrizzani has been in charge at Elland Road since buying out fellow Italian Massimo Cellino back in 2017, having arrived as an investor alongside the former owner.

The Whites finished third in the Championship last season after a disappointing 13th placed finish in Radrizzani’s first year at the helm.
