Chelsea look to have unblocked one of the jammed up outgoing transfers that’s slowing down their summer.

Carney Chukwuemeka is an impressive young player, and had a good second half of the season on loan at Dortmund last year. But there’s simply been no interest from any team in paying what Chelsea want for him.

Now it seems the Blues have changed their stance to get him moved on. Firstly they lowered his asking price to €25m, which still didn’t generate any solid interest.

Now, according to CaughtOffside, they’re bending on another aspect of the deal. Having briefed in public that they would only consider a permanent transfer, it seems the Blues are now “progressing quickly” in talks with Dortmund over another loan.

The player’s enthusiasm for a return has apparently played a key part in the revival of discussions, and we heard earlier in the summer from Dortmund director of football Sebastian Kehl that they were keen to get a deal done on their end too.

Loan with option a solid compromise – assuming Chelsea don’t need the money now

It’s been clear all along that Chelsea would prefer a permanent deal, but a loan with a compulsory purchase clause is a nice compromise, if the conditions to trigger the transfer are easily achievable.

Chelsea’s willingness to effectively receive the money for Chukwuemeka next summer will be affected by the other sales they’re making this summer, as they look to end the window with a positive net transfer balance.

But whether it does indeed end up being a loan with a clause or a simple transfer, all signs now point to a return to Dortmund for Chukwuemeka, it’s just a question of sorting out the details.
