Benik Afobe is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury in a devastating blow for Bristol City, Football Insider can reveal.
The prolific former Wolves and Arsenal striker has sustained a suspected ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in training this week.
A City source has told Football Insider that the club’s initial fear is that the on-loan forward will be out for the rest of the campaign.
Manager Lee Johnson will be shattered at the prospect of losing Afobe, 26, after he made an instant impact at Ashton Gate following his loan-to-buy transfer from Stoke City.
He has scored three goals in six Championship appearances and looked to be the answer to the team’s need for a regular goalscorer.
Now it appears that Afobe, who only joined City on transfer deadline day from Championship rivals Stoke, may have his loan cut harrowingly short.
Robins boss Johnson will be left with a big void to fill in attack, given the absence of a player who has scored 43 goals from 153 Championship matches for various clubs.
In other Bristol City news, it can be REVEALED how Derby County chased late move to sign one of Johnson’s men.
