Excl: “Nothing Formal…” – Sami Mokbel On Liverpool Linked Gem Who Was ‘Destroying Everyone’

Liverpool head into the final days of the transfer window with only a handful of obvious midfield targets in mind such as Ibrahim Sangare, Ryan Gravenberch, André and Crystal Palace star Cheick Doucoure.

The Reds have so far added Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and the surprise capture of Wataru Endo from Stuttgart. Albeit a report from James Pearce played down the prospect of another specialist six arriving on Merseyside, there remains the possibility that a more progressive type could be a late addition to Jurgen Klopp’s ranks.

Whilst Doucoure spent his first impressive season in London as a defensive midfielder, the 23-year-old had been allowed to play with more freedom previously at RC Lens and could well fit the bill of a more free-roaming option.

Heading into the final week I spoke to the Chief Football Reporter for the Daily Mail, Sami Mokbel (@SamiMokbel81_DM) to see whether there was a late deal to be done.

He said: “Situation as stands is that Palace are aware of the interest but are still saying nothing formal from Liverpool yet. The later it goes on, obviously, the harder it becomes. But I get the impression that if a big offer comes in for one of their best players (Eze, Doucoure, Olise) then it is very possible that Palace do it.”

The ‘big offer’ for Doucoure would likely have to be in the region of a previously mooted £70million to even tempt Palace into the conversation and despite the failed £111m swoop for Moises Caicedo earlier this summer, splashing out such fortunes in the final week feels farfetched.

That said, with Thiago still absent, Curtis Jones sidelined and Stefan Bajcetic currently making his way back to fitness – not to mention the fact Mac Allister was almost suspended for three matches – there is certainly a requirement for a midfield addition before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

André, Gravenberch and Kone may offer more affordable options but none of those have experienced the Premier League, a factor that could just push Klopp and co towards the man once praised by Andrés Onrubia Ramo for ‘destroying everyone’ in a Ligue 1 fixture against Nice in 2022.
