Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan is back in training and performing really well, according to Owls boss Darren Moore.

Bannan has been one of the best players in League One since dropping down to the third tier with Wednesday ahead of last season but has been sidelined since December due to injury.

The Yorkshire club have won four in four in his absence, including knocking Newcastle United out of the FA Cup, but news of the playmaker’s impending return is fantastic for them.

Via the club’s official Twitter account, Moore delivered an exciting update on Bannan today.

He said: “Barry is back in training and he’s training really well.

“Apart from the longer-term injuries, ahead of our last training session today, we have a clean bill of health for tomorrow.”

It remains to be seen when Bannan will be available again but you’d imagine the Owls would love to have him, at least as an option from the bench, for their top of the table clash with Plymouth Argyle on the 4th of February.

Wednesday have opened up a four-point gap over Ipswich Town in third place, and have a game in hand over the Tractor Boys, but are still three points back from League One leaders Plymouth.

This is exciting news from a Wednesday perspective.

They’ve been getting the job done without Bannan but having their skipper back soon will be a real boost.

He’s been one of the best players in the division over the past 18 months and Moore’s update suggests he is feeling good after recovering from injury.

If Bannan can hit the ground running, it could be the difference-maker in the race for promotion and perhaps even the title.
