Excelsior celebrated their 123rd anniversary with a new name for their stadium. The newly promoted team’s home ground is no longer called the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium, but will return to its original name, Woudestein.
The name of Van Donge & De Roo, a logistics service provider, has been on the stadium’s facade since the 2017-18 season. This now comes to an end after eight years, as Excelsior has chosen to restore the 4,500-capacity Woudestein to its former glory.
The club’s general manager, Daan Bovenberg, emphasises that this is very much a conscious decision. “Core values and identity play an important role in our future plans, both internally and externally. That’s why we’ve chosen to revert the name to Woudestein and not to associate a new commercial entity with our stadium.”
The first match at the renamed Woudestein is scheduled for Saturday, August 16th. It’s a special local clash, as Feyenoord pay a visit.
