Striker Marko Arnautovic and midfielder Davy Klaassen are pushing to start for Inter Milan against Salernitana on Friday.
Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, report that there should be quite a few changes to the Nerazzurri starting eleven for the Serie A clash.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi largely hasn’t tampered with his starting eleven in the last few matches.
There was rotation in midfield against Fiorentina last month. Davide Frattesi and Kristjan Asllani started that match in midfield.
But that was the result of injuries forcing the coach’s hand.
When Inzaghi has been able to, he has always gone with what he’s seen as his strongest possible starting eleven.
That has meant that Matteo Darmian has started in each of Inter’s last five matches, for example.
As have strikers Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram. And midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
However, that may not be the case for much longer.
Inter’s last five matches across all competitions have come against a real “murderer’s row” of big names from Italian football.
The Nerazzurri have faced the likes of Lazio, Napoli, Fiorentina, Juventus, and Roma.
This means that it is not exactly surprising that Inzaghi has aimed to play a strong team.
This Friday, on the other hand, the Nerazzurri host bottom-of-the-table Salernitana.
Of course, it is not a match that the team will want to underestimate or be complacent about.
But if there is a match in which to start rotating the team, Friday’s would surely be it.
Moreover, just a few days after that match, Inter will take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
So naturally, Inzaghi will want to have a lot of his most important players fresh for that match.
As such, there should be some rotation against the Granata at the end of this week.
Firstly, in attack, former Bologna and West Ham United striker Arnautovic has a very good chance of starting, the Corriere reports.
The Austrian will aim to take the place of either Martinez or Thuram leading the Nerazzurri line.
And in midfield, there will also be at least one or two significant changes.
All of Nicolo Barella, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Hakan Calhanoglu have been put to work significantly in recent weeks. So a rest for at least one or two would be probable.
The Corriere note how Davide Frattesi is still a doubt for Friday’s match. The 24-year-old is currently recovering from a thigh problem.
So it is not certain whether Frattesi will be able to take the place of one of the starters.
Therefore, that could mean that former Everton and Ajax veteran Davy Klaassen gets his second start in Serie A this season.
