Matej Vydra has joined Czech champions Viktoria Plzeň as he looks to get back playing after a serious knee injury.

The 30-year-old was with Burnley last season but he missed the final few games of the campaign after suffering a cruciate ligament injury against former club Watford.

With his deal at Turf Moor expiring in the summer, the Clarets were always unlikely to offer him an extension and that proved to be the case, meaning Vydra became a free agent.

He has spent the past few months returning from fitness and it appears he is now closing in on a return to action, as Lancashire Live revealed that Vydra has found a new club, as he returned home to the Czech Republic.

The ex-Derby man has not played in his home country since 2010, when he was with FC Baník Ostrava before moving to Udinese after impressing, although he has gone on to spend most of his career in England.

Vydra’s new club are currently top of the table and the forward has five weeks to get up to speed as their season doesn’t resume until the end of January due to the winter break.

Did John Guidetti ever score a goal for Burnley after joining on loan?

Yes No

The verdict

It’s a shame how things ended for Vydra at Burnley because he was a useful player over the years and he’s someone the fans probably felt warranted more game time than he got.

Whilst it ended in disappointment with the injury and relegation, he was part of a Burnley squad that made history for the club, so he will be fondly remembered.

Now though, his focus will be on Plzen and it will be interesting to see how he does back home and whether he returns to English football again down the line.
