Gareth Southgate would not take the Tottenham job if England have a successful European Championships and they will not want him if he fails.
That is the view of Southgate’s ex-Middlesborough teammate Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the prospect of the 50-year-old succeeding Jose Mourinho at Spurs.
The Transfer Window podcast claims the north London outfit have already made contact with Southgate’s representatives.
Football Insider understands Brendan Rodgers is Tottenham’s top choice to become the next manager and they are prepared to triple his Leicester City salary.
Asked whether Spurs could tempt Southgate to return to domestic football, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Not if the Euros go well because then you’ve got the potential of a World Cup off the back of that.
“If the Euros don’t go well, do Tottenham want him anyway? That’s a bit of a chicken and egg one.
“Why would you want to leave that role? Gareth doesn’t need the money, certainly not within the next year.
“Look at the young side that he’s putting together. If those players have a decent Euros then you’re thinking it’s another 18 months to the World Cup we’ve got a chance, a good chance in the winter when the players aren’t knackered from a full season. I tell you what, you have to wait for that.
“If you win the World Cup as a manager you’re getting knighted.
“Why would you leave? Let’s say England get to the semi-finals of the Euros, why would you leave immediately for the sake of a year? You wouldn’t.
“World Cup semi-final, Euro semi-final next step could be a World Cup final. Then you’re looking at statues and legendary status.”
