Russell Martin could be set for an EFL return next season.

Russell Martin is emerging as a surprise candidate to take over at Leicester City ahead of next season.

The Foxes appear doomed for an immediate relegation back to the Championship, and boss Ruud van Nistelrooy is coming under increasing pressure, with his side having lost 14 of their last 15 games in the Premier League.

That run is made even more concerning by the fact that they have failed to score in any of their last seven outings.

According to journalist Alan Nixon reporting via Patreon, Martin, who got Southampton promoted last time out before losing his job this term, is now developing into a potential option for the Foxes.

Sean Dyche is also believed to be on their radar, whilst links emerged with Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl earlier this week.

Leicester City are interested in Russell Martin

Martin came under fire for failing to adapt his style of football whilst the Saints were struggling in the top flight, but Nixon understands that his previous work in the second tier is what is catching the eye of Leicester.

Martin’s Southampton side amassed 87 points in the Championship back in 2023/24, before they secured promotion at Wembley in the play-off final.

That side became renowned for building from the back and playing fluid passing football, but that style became difficult to maintain effectively at Premier League level.

It is understood that Leicester are targeting a similar approach to that of Enzo Maresca, who got them promoted the last time they dropped into the Championship, which Martin would surely bring.

The former Swansea City and MK Dons boss is also being spoken about by City Group chiefs, who think his style of football would be ideal to lead one of the clubs they oversee.

According to Nixon, Dyche could also be in the frame for the Foxes, with the 53-year-old having won three Championship promotions with Burnley previously.

Leicester City links with Russell Martin will be a boost for Sheffield Wednesday

Martin’s emergence as a genuine option for Leicester could be a huge boost for Sheffield Wednesday.

It was reported earlier in the week by the Daily Mail that the Foxes are keen on their young German boss, Danny Rohl.

Rohl has done an outstanding job over the course of his stint at Hillsborough, helping to save them from relegation last term, before lifting them to the fringes of the play-off race this season.

His time in South Yorkshire has been made all the more impressive by the fact that owner Dejphon Chansiri can be extremely difficult to work with, with a public communication breakdown between manager and owner, as well as staff wages going unpaid just some of the off the pitch issues that have faced the club this season.

Rohl is also attracting interest from his homeland, in the form of RB Leipzig, but the possibility of Leicester moving on to another candidate will certainly give Wednesday renewed hope that Rohl could still be at the club next season.
