Former Serie A referee Gianpaolo Calvarese feels that Marco Guida was correct to not give a yellow card for an Adrien Rabiot tackle on Nicolo Barella.

The official gives the view in his column in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. He also praises Guida for keeping the players’ tempers under control.

On the whole, yesterday evening’s Derby d’Italia was not overly ill-tempered by the standards of the fixture.

At least for the first hour and change, there were few flashpoint incidents.

But both Inter and Juventus players did start to air their grievances towards the end of the match. Perhaps the tension of the occasion was starting to weigh on some nerves.

The introduction of former Bianconeri wingback Juan Cuadrado as a Nerazzurri substitute certainly added a spark as some of his old teammates left a bit in with their tackles.

And there was one strong challenge by Juventus midfielder Rabiot on his Inter counterpart Barella.

The Nerazzurri players were absolutely adamant that the late tackle was worth a booking.

But Guida stuck to his view that it was no more than a foul. And for his part, Calvarese agrees with the decision.

Calvarese: Guida Correct Not To Book Rabiot For Foul On Barella

“Inter demanded a yellow card for Rabiot for his tackle on Barella,” Calvarese notes.

“But Guida was right not to caution the Juventus player.”

Calvarese continues that “Guida always kept the tempers at bay.”

“He respected everyone and made himself respected,” the former referee writes.

“On the few occasions when the tension started to rise, he managed the situation the way that he usually does – with open dialogue.”

“The Campanian referee made no major errors and brought the Derby d’Italia home,” Calvarese argues.

“And the players helped him in that respect.”

“There was no lack of accuracy in his decisions,” he argues. “Even if he had little to do in either penalty area.”
