Ewandro Costa, a product of São Paulo's academy and professional debutant in 2014, made a notable impact in European competition this week, according to Arquibancada Tricolor. Now 29 and plying his trade for Omonia in Cyprus, Ewandro was instrumental in his side’s emphatic 4-0 win over Araz Naxçıvan of Azerbaijan in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round.
Ewandro contributed both creatively and in front of goal, notching one goal and providing two assists during the rout in Nicosia. His performance showcased the attacking flair and composure that once marked him as one of São Paulo’s promising talents.
Another former São Paulo player, goalkeeper Fabiano, also started for Omonia, having come through the Tricolor’s youth ranks. His presence in goal helped secure a clean sheet, which gives the Cypriot club a sizeable advantage heading into the return leg.
The second leg of the tie is scheduled for Thursday, with Omonia hosting and aiming to secure a spot in the next stage of the competition.
São Paulo’s tradition of exporting young prospects continues to resonate abroad, with academy graduates regularly featuring in continental competitions. Ewandro’s display this week is a reminder of the club’s capacity to develop players who go on to impact matches at a high level, even as they build their careers away from MorumBIS.
