Former AC Milan and Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo feels that the current problem with Inter’s form could be something primarily mental.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 Serie A defeat to Roma, Montolivo suggested that the Nerazzurri are gifting too many chances to opponent and that there could be a problem with the players’ mental approach to games.

Inter did not broadly play badly against Roma, as they controlled possession and the tempo of the match well, and did not allow the Giallorossi to get a foothold from which to put them under pressure apart from a couple of spells.

However, the Nerazzurri allowed Roma to scored from a fairly straightforward counterattack not long after taking the lead, and then in the second half switched off from a set piece to allow Giallorossi defender Chris Smalling to score a winner.

Montolivo feels that these kinds of errors to allow opponents good opportunities from relatively innocuous situations are happening too frequently and could have a mental cause.

“Maybe it’s a mental problem,” he suggested. “Inter are gifting chances to other teams, it happened today and it also happened in the derby, to Leao. It’s not easy to get out of this moment, they lack a player who creates numerical superiority, they had one in Perisic but he’s gone.”
