Goalkeeper Josep Martinez will finally make his long-awaited debut for Inter Milan against Udinese in the Coppa Italia.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter spent big to bring in Martinez over the summer. The 26-year-old arrived from Genoa, with the clear understanding that he would be the long-term successor to Yann Sommer in goal.
However, this season, there has been little hint of Martinez starting to take over.
Sommer has played every minute of the campaign.
The 36-year-old’s performances have not declined. Therefore, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has given him the nod week in and week out.
Moreover, the fact that Sommer has retired from international duty has given him the international breaks off to keep himself at his freshest.
In Serie A, the pressure on Inter has been high. Therefore, it’s been little surprise to see Inzaghi turn to the reliable Sommer, who helped Inter to the title last season.
Meanwhile, in the Champions League, there has been a similar “win now” impetus. Inter have had to amass result quickly to push for qualification for the round of sixteen.
As such, Inzaghi hasn’t yet felt it’s the right time to give Martinez his chance.
The former RB Leipzig and Las Palmas man has accordingly not yet had any tests in which Inter fans can see whether or not he is really ready to be the long-term Number One.
The wait won’t be much longer, however.
Tuttpsport report that Inzaghi sees next Thursday as the right time to finally reward Martinez for his hard work in training.
The Spaniard will be in the Inter starting eleven against Udinese in the Coppa Italia round of sixteen, the newspaper anticipate.
