L’Équipe report that former Paris Saint-Germain defender Gabriel Heinze has been appointed as the new manager of Newell’s Old Boys.
Heinze served PSG as a player between 2001 and 2004 and made around a ton of appearances for the Parisien club while playing as a left-back as well as a centre-back on several occasions.
After leaving the French capital, Heinze moved to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Marseille and Roma respectively before deciding to hang his boots at Newell’s Old Boys.
Heinze was eventually unveiled as the new boss of the Argentine side on Tuesday. The official statement from the club reads, “Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys informs that Gabriel Heinze is the new coach of our first team.”
His predecessor, Adrián Coria resigned in August after just nine months at the helm of the South American side. And since then, Lionel Messi’s former club has been searching for an astute replacement.
Before joining La Lepra, Heinze had previous managerial experiences with Argentinos Juniors, Vélez Sarsfield, and Atlanta United. Newell’s Old Boys finished in the 11th position after amassing 40 points from 27 matches last season.
