Former Real Madrid and Inter Milan winger Luis Figo has offered an honest assessment of an enthralling Serie A title race.

In his recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, the ex-Portugal international lauded Napoli’s progress under Antonio Conte.

However, Figo insists that reigning Scudetto holders Inter remain the ‘team to beat’ in Italy’s top flight this season.

Napoli have enjoyed a renaissance under Conte.

Last night’s 2-0 win against AC Milan saw the Partenopei extend their lead at Serie A’s table summit to seven points.

But Inter can reduce the gap later this evening when they take on Tuscan minnows Empoli at Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Despite facing a minor injury crisis, Simone Inzaghi cannot afford a slip-up against Roberto D’Aversa’s underperforming side.

Unlike last year, when Inter strolled to the title, leaving runners-up Milan 19 points behind, the picture looks different this term.

With Napoli leading the way and Juventus yet to lose a league game, the Nerazzurri will have to work their socks off to defend the crown.

Former Inter Milan Winger Luis Figo Delivers His Verdict on Dramatic Scudetto Race

“I always follow Italian football with great affection and interest. It seems to me that it is in an excellent moment,’ Figo said.

“And my Inter are always very strong. This makes me so happy, the Nerazzurri are always in my heart.

“I don’t think it will be very different from the last few years, especially since the specific strength of the teams doesn’t seem to have changed much.

“The strength of Inter is clear to everyone; they are the team that has dominated in recent years.

“Napoli has also started very well and is having an excellent start to the season. We’ll see what Milan and Juventus can do as well.”

Asked if Inter are still a team to beat, Figo said: “Looking at the last few years, I really think so.

“Even today, they are the most complete team of all. I hope they win the title again.”

Without the distraction of European football, Napoli could be a formidable opposition.

“This is an aspect that can definitely be very important. Fatigue at a certain point in the season is felt in the players’ muscles,” Figo added.
