Sol Bamba will not be taking up a player-coach role at Swindon Town ahead of 2022/23, according to the Daily Mail’s Ryan Walker.
The 37-year-old, who recovered from a cancer diagnosis in his time at Cardiff City, was close to joining the Robins after his deal expired at Middlesbrough this summer.
The Ivorian made 29 appearances for Boro last season, and scored a spot kick in the club’s memorable FA Cup triumph over Manchester United.
His role at The Riverside included some coaching responsibilities last season and it felt like something similar could be carried out with the Robins in League Two next term.
this morning.
“Bamba was offered a player-coach role at #stfc but will instead take some time out from football.”
Clearly someone looking for their first break as a coach, while still hoping to play some part on the pitch, it will be interesting to monitor where Bamba’s next move is.
The elegant defender is a very good communicator and has delved in and out of work with Sky Sports in recent years.

True False
It is highly unlikely that Bamba is taken on in solely playing terms next season, and that does not seem to be the desire from the 37-year-old either, therefore Swindon Town seemed like an appropriate stepping stone, with Scott Lindsey piecing together his backroom staff, following the departures of Ben Garner and others to Charlton Athletic.
Having first played in England in 2011, and exclusively since 2015, the French-born defender almost feels like part of the furniture in the EFL, and he did himself justice in the Premier League with Cardiff City in 2018/19.
The charismatic veteran will be valued wherever his next move is, with the potential that he hangs up his boots increasing with the news that the Swindon Town role is no longer viable.
