Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is “desperate to return” to England, as per reports.

The 23-year-old moved to the south of France from Manchester last summer after United agreed a £26.6million fee with Olympique de Marseille to part ways with their academy product on a permanent basis. He signed a five-year deal with the Phocéens.

In his 31 appearances in Ligue 1, Greenwood has notched 18 goals and five assists. Only Paris Saint-Germain talisman Ousmane Dembele has scored more than the Marseille youngster in France’s top flight this season.

Before the March international break, there appeared to be some tension between him and Roberto De Zerbi, who even dropped him to the bench twice. But such is his talent that the Italian manager has once again made him a key part of his side.

Despite impressing in France, Greenwood, however, is “pining for a return” to England, writes The Sun.

The outlet claims Greenwood is “yearning for a return to the UK” with his family after enjoying his time in Spain at Getafe and France at Marseille.

A source revealed to The Sun: “He’s been abroad for nearly two years and the novelty has worn off. Mason’s family visit but he is very introverted and misses his extended family and the friends he has from home.

“A move back to the North West could suit him as he feels the vitriol he previously faced has died down a bit and people may have moved on.”

Greenwood’s desire has reportedly put a string of Premier League clubs on “red alert”.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Liverpool are interested in Greenwood.

Considering the circumstances that led to his departure from Old Trafford, it’s fair to assume United are unlikely to hand him an opportunity to return to the Premier League.

However, they would certainly keep an eye on his situation as the Mancunians included a 50 per cent sell-on clause in their agreement with Marseille. His return to the country may also split opinion among the United fanbase.
