Bayer Leverkusen have made progress in talks with Erik ten Hag over becoming the club’s new head coach.
Ten Hag is the new frontrunner to replace Xabi Alonso at the Bundesliga side, following the latter’s decision to leave Leverkusen for Real Madrid.
Leverkusen had been interested in appointing Como coach Cesc Fabregas, but the Italian side are determined to keep hold of the Spaniard.
The German outfit have now turned their attention to Ten Hag, who has been out of working since leaving Manchester United in October.
Ten Hag was sacked at Old Trafford after a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign, despite winning silverware in each of his two seasons in charge. The Dutchman led Manchester United to League Cup success in his debut year – ending a six-season wait for a trophy – before lifting the FA Cup in 2023/24.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that negotiations between Ten Hag and Leverkusen have progressed well with the 55-year-old keen on the move to the BayArena.
The move would mark a return to Germany for Ten Hag, who coached Bayern Munich’s second side from 2013 to 2015. Earlier this season, Ten Hag worked in an advisory role for Borussia Dortmund.
Leverkusen are aiming to bounce back next season after a trophyless campaign. Having won a historic maiden Bundesliga title in 2023/24 without losing a game, Die Werkself finished 13 points behind Bayern Munich this season.
