Alex McLeish has claimed Kalvin Phillips could still hit new heights for Leeds United after starring on international duty.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted onlookers had only seen “flashes” of the 25-year-old’s true quality during the 2020/21 campaign.
Phillips caught the eye in England’s 1-0 win over Croatia as contributed the assist for Raheem Sterling’s winner.
He has been heralded for his performance by fans and pundits alike, with Ian Wright calling him “phenomenal”.
McLeish admitted he had been hugely impressed by Phillips’ performances for Leeds during the 2020/21 campaign.
However, he suggested the midfielder’s international display proved there is even more to come from the homegrown hero.
“Outstanding. We’ve been talking about the boy all season,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“He’s a special player, he’s got good vision, he’s got a great passing technique as you see with the through ball for the goal.
“I feel his reputation has gone up a notch or two with that performance.
“People have really tuned in. We’ve seen flashes with Leeds during the season, Match of the Day, a few live games, but we are seeing he can really step up a level.
“He will be a sensation in the Premier League next season, I’m sure.”
Phillips now has nine international caps under his belt for England.
Phillips made 29 league appearances last term following Leeds’ promotion back to the top flight.
He has played 211 times for his boyhood club and has three years left on his contract at Elland Road.
In other news, a Football Insider pundit has suggested Manchester United could launch shock raid for Leeds United ace.
