Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has revealed that Marcus Rashford is surrounded by too many people who are not honest with him.

Rashford’s United form has not been great for a number of months, with the player also losing his place in the England national team.

Last term, Rashford registered just eight goals in 43 appearances across all competitions – a far cry from the 30 strikes he plundered the campaign before.

So far this term, the Carrington academy graduate has managed four goals in 11 games, including one in the Premier League.

McCarthy – who was appointed as United coach two years ago before his departure in the summer – was largely credited for Rashford’s exploits in front of goal in 2022/23 and so knows one or two things about the player that the rest of us may not be privy to.

The 46-year-old spoke to Supersport and opened up about Rashford.

According to McCarthy, Rashford does not have the greatest support system as he is surrounded by too many people who tell him what he wants to hear as opposed to people who are fully honest with him.

McCarthy told the broadcaster, “Obviously Rashy is special, a special player and a special human being. He’s Man United through and through.”

“With me, with me it wasn’t ‘oh Rashy’ it was ‘Marcus’ with me I was straight to the point and he respected that.”

“Instead of sweet-talking him because I need him to score so the team wins for other reasons.”

He added, “I was a straight shooter, and I don’t think he has enough people in his life who are straight with him because everyone tells him what he needs to hear and what he wants to hear, but I was normal and I think he appreciated that.”

Rashford and his teammates return to action on Saturday, October 19, when they host Thomas Fran’s Brentford at Old Trafford.
