Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen have announced that midfielder Naby Keïta has been suspended for the rest of the season.
It relates to a serious disciplinary breach from the former Liverpool man in which he refused to travel to Leverkusen with the side last weekend after learning he would not be part of the starting line-up – despite the side running low on squad numbers.
In addition to his internal ban, Keïta has also been handed a substantial fine by the club and is not permitted to train or spend time in the dressing room with the senior squad.
“Naby’s behaviour cannot be tolerated by us as a club,” the club’s head of their professional department, Clemens Fritz, stated. “He let his team down during a difficult situation and put himself above the team.
“We can’t allow that. At this stage of the season, we need to put full focus on the remaining games and be a tight-knit unit. Therefore, we had no alternative but to take this measure.”
It remains unclear if the 29-year-old will be moved on this summer as a result of the situation.
