Former Lazio and Torino goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani believes that on the balance of incoming and outgoing transfer business, Inter have strengthened their squad over the summer.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Marchegiani gave his assessment of the Nerazzurri’s summer transfer window and argued that, at least as things stand, the Nerazzurri have improved compared to the level of their squad last time around.

Inter have seen the back of a number of players, including experienced internationals such as Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanchez, Matias Vecino, and Andrea Ranocchia.

However, the sense is that none of these players were ideal fits for the system used by Simone Inzaghi, whilst the signings that they have been made have been more clearly targeted to make the team suitable to the coach’s ideas.

Especially considering the expected impact of a returning Romelu Lukaku, the team has become stronger on paper, and this is the view of Marchegiani.

“If we take the balance of the players departed and those signed, in my opinion they’ve improved,” he said of the Nerazzurri. “Gosens does not give the team the same certainty, but he’ll grow into the team.”

“Mkhitaryan can be a good alternative to Calhanoglu,” he continued. “Asllani is an excellent deputy Brozovic. In my opinion, Lukaku didn’t play very well, but he gives the team added value.”
