Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Njabulo Ngcobo has joined Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town City after agreeing to a mutual termination with Sekhukhune United at the end of last season.

The former Premier Soccer League (PSL) defender of the season signed for Babina Noko on a free transfer ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, after he was deemed surplus to requirements at Naturena as Chiefs opted against extending his stay.

However, his spell with the Limpopo club was significantly hampered by a lack of game time, with then-coach Lehlohonolo Seema and current boss Eric Tinkler preferring the center-back partnership of experienced Daniel Cardoso and Tresor Tshibwabwa.

Ngcobo made a handful of appearances for Sekhukhune last season, managing to feature in just six games across all competitions. As a result, the two parties agreed to amicably part ways, with the player seeking ample game time.

Upon his availability on the market as a free agent, the center-back was assessed by Chippa United, but a deal never materialized, while newly promoted Durban City were said to have held talks in a bid to lure him to KZN.

Now, Ngcobo has found a new home with the relegated Citizens in the mother city, as the John Comitis-owned team targets an immediate automatic promotion to the lucrative Betway Premiership after a dismal showing last season.

While the Cape club lost several seasoned campaigners, they have brought in experience in their ranks as they have already acquired the services of ex-Mamelodi Sundowns defender Sfiso Ngobeni, Dutch striker and goalkeeper Simon van Duivenbooden and Mickey van de Hart, respectively.

With the 2025/26 second division campaign set to commence on Friday, 22 August, City will square off against Venda FC in their opening match. It remains to be seen whether the club can return to the elite league, with the second tier having proved to be a cutthroat competition.
