Beltrami had started off his career as a player, coming through the AC Milan academy before making appearances for the likes of Hellas Verona, Varese, and Monza, and then after hanging up his boots settled into life in a directorial role.

In 1977, Beltrami was appointed as Sporting Director of Inter by then-President Ivanoe Fraizzoli, a role which he would go on to hold for the next sixteen years.

Beltrami enjoyed an excellent relationship with legendary former Nerazzurri striker Sandro Mazzola, and during his time at the club he brought in legendary players such as striker Alessandro Altobelli and midfielder Evaristo Beccalossi.

The former Sporting Director was also responsible for bringing in coaches Eugenio Bersellini and Giovanni Trappatoni, with whom they won the Serie A title in the 1979-80 and the 1988-89 seasons respectively.
