Former Inter and Roma right-back Maicon was interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of tonight’s Roma-Inter.

“I believe that in his heart Mourinho will feel a lot of emotions, even after so many years some things are not forgotten.”

On Mourinho at Roma:

“He is learning to get to know his players, to relate to a type of team he hasn’t coached for a long time. You see, at Inter he had experienced players, ours was a group used to being at a high level. And so he knew exactly what to ask of us, he even imagined what answers he could get.”

“At Roma, with this particular Roma, it is not like that. He has a young group of guys. I see very good guys, I think of Pellegrini, Ibanez, Zaniolo. And paradoxically, he learns more from players like them, who have yet to fully form into mature players.”

“The two entities, coach and team, have yet to get to know each other thoroughly. It takes more time, that’s normal. And it is certainly a more difficult challenge.”

On Mourinho’s criticism of referees:

“The truth is one: for him the players must stay out of any negative post-match commentary.”

“He wants his face to be on TV or in the newspapers and that’s it. And so he shifts the attention, it is a way to protect his guys.”

“Anyway, what he has to tell you he gets it across to you. And this thing is appreciated by the players, at least we felt so.”
