Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca believes that the title race with Juventus in Serie A will go down to the wire.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, Pagliuca predicted the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri will still be battling for the title in the last month of the season.
Next weekend’s Serie A match between Inter and Juventus could certainly be a turning point in the title race.
Given the narrow margin that has existed between the two teams for the past couple months, it could be an opportunity for either of the pair to open up an actual gap.
But on the other hand, there is no way that there will be more than a few points separating the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri even after that head-to-head meeting.
That means that, at least unless one of the pair’s form really drops off, the situation will basically remain the same.
One or two results would be all that it takes to suddenly shift the momentum.
“Because Inter may have a higher-quality squad with better depth,” he continued.
“But they’re also still fighting for the Champions League.”
“I imagine that it will a nerve-wracking battle right until the end,” Pagliuca said.
And the former keeper also suggested that a key man for Inter being absent could play a role against Fiorentina this evening.
“The absence of Calhanoglu, one of the best midfielders in Europe, can have an impact,” he said.
“But Frattesi, another international-quality player, will be playing in Barella’s place.”
Moreover, Pagliuca gave his view on which player can make the difference for Inter in the title race.
He named “Lautaro.”
“The Argentine has been scoring goals for fun. We have to hope that he can keep going at this pace until May.”
Pagliuca added that “He’s a top player, and a driving force.”
