Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca feels that Yann Sommer should be the clear starter over Josep Martinez.

The former keeper gave his views in an interview in today’s edition of Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. He argued that there should not be an alternation in goal.

Inter signed goalkeeper Martinez from Genoa this summer.

The Nerazzurri’s plan seems fairly clear. The Spaniard is to be the long-term successor to Sommer, who is currently 35.

However, that does not mean that Martinez is replacing Sommer right away.

On the contrary, the former Bayern Munich keeper has started all three of Inter’s matches in Serie A so far this season.

And there is every indication that Sommer will continue to start for the foreseeable future.

That does not mean that Martinez won’t get his opportunities. But for now at least, he is going to be clearly playing second fiddle.

Pagliuca: “Sommer Must Start Over Martinez At Inter”

Former Inter keeper Pagliuca argued that “The hierarchy is well-defined” in Inter’s goal.

“Simone Inzaghi is very firm on the keeper.”

“He chooses the starter, and then oes forward with him,” he said of Inter’s coach.

“And right now, the starter is Sommer,” Pagliuca said. “And then Martinez is second in command.”

“At big teams, many coaches expect to have two players for every position. Even in goal.”

Pagliuca noted that “Inter are an ambitious team that want to win, and so they have two players who can be number one between the posts.”

But he argued that “We tend to try and create these ‘dualisms’ in a position that, in my view, shouldn’t have one.”

Pagliuca said that “This kind of a choice certainly is not going to make the first-choice feel comfortable in his role.”

Pagliuca said that “Sommer won the title last season.”

“He did very well between the posts, and you can’t just put a player like him aside.”
