The two clubs originally intended to demolish the current Giuseppe Meazza ground and build a new modern stadium in its stead.

However, the superintendency prevented them from doing so. The committee placed a restraint order on the stadium, citing its historical and cultural value.

The two clubs then split paths, with Inter working on their own project in Rozzano, and Milan doing likewise in San Donato. These are two regions on the outskirts of Milano.

Nevertheless, the City mayor Giuseppe Sala has been desperate to keep the two Serie A giants within his city walls.

After all, we’re talking about two of the biggest clubs not just in Italy, but in Europe as well. The Derby della Madonnina is one of the most anticipated fixtures in football as evidenced by the massive exposure and fanfare that accompanies it, as well as the traction it gets on sport betting websites.

But after months of delegations. the two clubs have turned down Sala’s San Siro renovation project.

Instead, Milan and Inter would prefer to construct a new stadium in the San Siro area alongside the current Giuseppe Meazza ground.

Andrea Mandorlini Urges Inter Milan & AC Milan To Stay At San Siro

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri believe this would be a more beneficial project.

Nevertheless, Mandorlini would rue the day the two clubs leave the original stadium.

The 64-year-old remains emotionally attached to the venue after representing his beloved Inter between 1984 and 1991.

“Not playing at San Siro anymore would be abominable,” said the former Hellas Verona coach in an interview with Adnkronos via TuttoMercatoWeb.

“This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. I really can’t believe it.

“San Siro is the cradle of Italian and Milanese football, it’s the Scala of football. I hope it doesn’t happen.”

“I have wonderful memories linked to that stadium. The first was the debut in 1984 and then, of course, the record-breaking season in 1989.

“I was teammates with the likes of Ferri, Bergomi, Zenga and Berti. We were friends on and off the pitch.

“I’ve been a Nerazzurri fan since I was a child. For me, it was the achievement of a dream. It’s hard to stop, it’s certainly my favorite club. We were all children once.”
