Ex-Inter Defender Nicolas Burdisso: “Romelu Lukaku Joining Nerazzurri Has Helped Serie A Regain Appeal” | OneFootball

Romelu Lukaku’s arrival at Inter has helped Serie A become one of Europe’s greatest leagues again, according to the Nerazzurri’s former defender Nicolas Burdisso.

Lukaku joined Inter in the summer of 2019 in a club record transfer deal from Manchester United and has scored 54 goals in 77 appearances under Antonio Conte since.

Burdisso, who spent five seasons at Inter, has credited the Belgian’s arrival – as well as that of Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus – in helping the level of Serie A improve during recent seasons.

“In recent years we have seen the excellent arrivals of Ronaldo and Lukaku, clubs have returned to spending big and today Serie A is at the same level of the Premier League,” the Argentine explained in an interview with 90min.com.

“The matches are entertaining again from all points of view.

“The mentality has changed and all teams try to play progressive football, so it is no coincidence that Serie A boasts the highest average goal rating in Europe.

“What we are witnessing this season is emblematic of this, with almost all the teams fighting for their objectives until the end of the season.”

Burdisso then went on to discuss former Inter teammate Adriano and shared his belief that the troubled striker could have become as good as another Nerazzurri legend.

“I knew Adriano since the days of the youth national teams in which we had faced each other many times, and of all the champions I have played with he is the one that surprised me the most,” Burdisso revealed.

“He had an incredible, out-of-the-ordinary potential.

“It is a pity that some incidents in his private life negatively affected his career.

“For me he could have easily reached Brazilian Ronaldo’s levels.”

Burdisso joined Inter in 2004 from Boca Juniors and made 139 appearances for the club before leaving for Roma in 2009.

During his time in Milan, the 39-year-old won four Serie A titles, three Italian Supercups and two Coppa Italia titles.
