Former Everton goalkeeper Dan Rose has explained leaving for Schalke this summer.

Rose, 16, turned down a scholarship with Everton this summer after four seasons at Finch Farm and decided to join Schalke where he will link-up with their under-19 side.

"I think that made the deal a little tougher because of the two different parts [Kenny and Rose] between Everton and Schalke but luckily they were able to overcome that," Rose told Irish Football Fan TV.

"It [was] a long six months [but] I'm absolutely buzzing and really excited."

Rose revealed current Ireland manager Stephen Kenny called his father after learning of interest from Schalke but the shot-stopper was already convinced he was taking the 'natural next step' after watching the progress of Jadon Sancho at Borussia Dortmund.

"Quite a few people I've spoken to have told me it's a brave move but I didn't really think of it like that," he added. "I've seen quite a few players move to Germany recently.

"Sancho was the first one and that worked out very well for him and for me it just seemed like the natural next step for where I wanted to go.

"I think with the culture here, the language - I already spoke a little bit of German so that helps - it just felt like the right move for me at the time."
