Former Chivas player Adolfo ‘Bofo’ Bautista has decided to try his hand at politics.

The 41-year-old, who enjoyed two spells with the Flock, has announced his intention to run for office as a federal deputy for the state of Jalisco.

He will be a candidate for Encuentro Solidario party, a Christian right-wing organisation.

Although the party is contesting its first federal elections in 2021, it is essentially made up of the same leaders of PES, which was dissolved after it lost its electoral registration in 2018.

Bautista enjoyed a 18-year professional playing career, starting at lowly Tecos and finishing up in 2016 at indoor side Chicago Mustangs in the United States.

The extrovert striker made 38 appearances for Mexico between 2002 and 2010, scoring 11 goals during his international career.

Bautista will be not the first former Mexican footballer to make the move into the political fray.

Cuauhtémoc Blanco is currently Governor of Morelos, while Manuel Negrete is the Mayor of the Coyoacán municipality of Mexico City.
