Wingback Zappacosta has been a regular in the Atalanta starting eleven this season.

The Italian international had featured in eight of La Dea’s matches prior to the Serie A clash with Empoli on Monday.

However, Zappacosta did not feature against the Tuscan side. The reason for this was that the former Chelsea and Torino man has been suffering with some flu-like symptoms.

Therefore, it was instead Hans Hateboer who started on the right flank for Atalanta against Empoli.

Apart from the Dutchman, Atalanta also have Emil Holm who can play on the right.

The Swede was a summer arrival at the Gewiss Stadium from Spezia. He had also been a player on Inter’s radar, before the Nerazzurri signed Juan Cuadrado on a free transfer.

The wingback positions are certainly crucial for La Dea coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

As with Nerazzurri boss Simone Inzaghi, Gasperini relies on the wide players for a lot of creative threat, as well as running and positional versatility to keep the width in his team shape.

And Zappacosta has proven to be an important player for Gasperini since his arrival in 2021.

Atalanta signed the Italian from Chelsea.

And since his arrival, Zappacosta has made a total of 74 appearances for the club. He had also been a player for Atalanta in two other spells, including during the 2014-15 season.

Zappacosta has yet to score or assist a goal yet this season.

However, the 31-year-old showed how much of an impact he can make in the final third last campaign. Then, he scored four goals and assisted another two.

Zappacosta has been a fixture in the Atalanta starting eleven this season in any event.

And there is every chance of the Italian returning on Saturday.
