Gallagher, who was one of Chelsea’s top performers under Mauricio Pochettino had just one year remaining on his contract this summer, and it had been clear for a while the club wanted to sell him.

Petit upset over Gallagher decision

Many fans were upset with how the club treated Gallagher and a lot were sad to see him leave, although there were also many who were happy with the decision.

After a very protracted transfer saga that seemed like it might fall through at one point, Gallagher completed his move to Atletico for around €42m after the Blues agreed a deal to sign Joao Felix.

Gallagher certainly possesses characteristics that money can’t buy in terms of his work rate, incredible desire and understanding what it means to play for Chelsea.

Gallagher swapped the Premier League for La Liga this summer.

Former Chelsea midfielder Petit has opened up on how upset he was over the decision and sent a warning to his former club.

“I was very, very upset about the situation because he is really a player I like,” he told the Seaman Says podcast as cited by Mundo Deportivo.

“Conor Gallagher was one of the best players last season, along with Cole Palmer , and he was on the transfer list!

“You know how important it is to have some English players for the fans, the identity, the DNA, for everything. I think it’s very important, so they have to be very careful.

“So, they sold Gallagher, one of the best players last season, for a very low price, 42 million euros. And when you look at the money they spent over the last three or four seasons, I think: what the hell?”

Only time will tell if Chelsea will regret the decision to sell, but what’s really important is players who have the club’s DNA running through them aren’t all removed from the squad.
