Striker Alvaro Morata will be out for Atletico Madrid in next week’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg against Inter Milan.

The Colchoneros confirm that the former Chelsea, Juventus, and Real Madrid striker has suffered a bone contusion and knee sprain in his right knee. This will cause him to miss the match against Inter.

Atletico suffered a defeat in La Liga, losing away to Sevilla.

And it wasn’t just the result which put a dent in the mood for the club from the Spanish capital. There was also an injury to striker Morata.

The 31-year-old has been a key player for Diego Simeone’s side in attack this season.

And Morata started yesterday’s match. However, he was only able to see out the first half.

Injury was the reason that Morata did not return to the pitch for the second half of yesterday’s match.

However, it was not immediately clear how serious the problem was for the Spanish international.

Morata is an important player for Atletico. The 31-year-old has formed the first-choice strike partnership at the Wanda Metropolitano alongside Antoine Griezmann.

Morata’s goals and holdup play have been an important feature of how the team play under Simeone.

The Spaniard has already scored nineteen goals this season. Five came in the Champions League, where he was a key man as the Spanish giants topped their group.

Therefore, Morata is hardly a player who Atletico would want to do without in the knockouts.

But the Spaniard will play no part in at least the first leg of the round of sixteen.

The Colchoneros travel to the San Siro to face Inter next Tuesday. And Morata will miss that match as he recovers from the injury he’s suffered.
