Juan Mata is set to continue his decorated career with a move to Australian A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers.

The 36-year-old is set to sign for the Australian outfit after a short spell in Japan with Vissel Kobe, as he extends his career into a new competition. Mata spent the bulk of his career in the Premier League where he represented Chelsea and Manchester United.

After arriving in West London from Valencia, he won the FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League at Chelsea and won the club’s Player of the Year award in 2012 and 2013.

A £37m move to Manchester United followed in January 2014 and Mata made 285 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 51 goals, and adding three major trophies.

At international level, Mata formed part of the Spanish side that dominated international football with successes at the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship.

His signing represents a coup for Australian football, as the nation looks to build on the success of hosting the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
