Former Celtic fan favourite Charlie Mulgrew has agreed a two-year deal with Dundee United. Having spent a spell at Tannadice on loan back in 2006, Mulgrew returns to the club after five years away from Scotland.

Mulgrew left Celtic in 2016 after not being offered a new deal by Brendan Rodgers and signed for Blackburn Rovers. In five years at Ewood Park, Mulgrew was loaned out twice to Wigan and Fleetwood Town. Now, the 35-year-old has sealed a move back to Scotland.

United boss Tam Courts was delighted at the news, telling the United website.

“I’m excited to have a player of Charlie’s winning pedigree available to me for the next two years,” said Courts. “I believe that he joins an existing group of senior players who already give everything to make Dundee United better on the pitch.

“Charlie is renowned for his leadership and impact on young players which is something that will be valuable in their development.”

Mulgrew spent six years at Celtic, making 207 appearances and scoring 28 goals. He would bring a combination of experience and quality to United’s backline as they look to build from their 9th placed finish last season. Mulgrew brings experience and quality to the United backline and will be looking forward to locking horns with Celtic again with a trip to Celtic Park scheduled for the 25th of September.

Celtic, meanwhile, are needing to recruit well this summer as new boss Ange Postecoglou prepares to mount a challenge for the league and seal qualification to the Champions League. The Australian will know that there is an enormity of work ahead but the first new signing, Liam Shaw, arrived today. Much like Mulgrew, Shaw is a versatile defensive midfielder, who could find himself playing at the back next season.
